Underwater research of Roman harbour Barbir in Suko�an

From 9^th to 20^th October 2017, ICUA underwater archaeologists carried out the first systematic archaeological excavation in the area of the Roman harbour Barbir in Suko�an. It was known for the existence of submerged constructions from earlier underwater surveys, and the structures of the two peers are visible from the aerial photographs. This year, funds for the excavations are provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. New drawings, plans and pictures for photogrammetry of the underwater structures and coastal walls were done, and 4 archaeological trenches were excavated. Along with the small archaeological finds, the basic structure of the mole was discovered which was constructed with pillars and stones. During the course of the research, two courses with around ten participants were carried out. "Nautical Archeology Society course" with participants from Italy, Greece and Croatia, and in cooperation with Slovenian ZAPA, "Underwater photogrammetry course" attended by participants from Switzerland, Italy, Montenegro and Croatia.
